I hosted a couple salon nights at my loft this past week, as well as a jazz safari Saturday night with Ross Porter and a talent scout from England in tow.
Sheena remained in town for a few days and was happy to have so many talented musicians come over to Chez Bee to hang and perform.
By the way, I should mention I always give my homes a name…this one began as a joke because I live in a warehouse…nothing Chez Bee about it! Now that I have had several salons in my place, it’s (unintentionally) taken on a different meaning.
There are hundreds of people I wish could visit these events.
I’ve a few friends who insist I run a club so more people can attend and I’m working on a template that is guaranteed good times and bad business. Ha! We’ll see how that goes but IF I ever ran another club, (my only experience was The BeeHive, now the Velvet Underdround, on Queen West in 1990), it would have some very unique elements. Free beans and rice to anyone playing in the club and giant dill pickles on the menu…they go so good with beer! But I digress…
The Jazz Safari on Saturday was a blast. Barbra Lica joined me and sang with Richard Whiteman and Duncan Hopkins at The Old Mill. I got up and did a couple songs myself. I took the 20 donors, plus Ross Porter and a VIP from Europe…over to Hugh’s Room to enjoy the Bacharach tribute that Kurt Swinghammer and Lori Cullen produce and host each year.
Other special guests included Lily Frost, Ron Sexsmith and Dave Wall, who ripped the roof off the joint! Then to Dovercourt House for a surreal time swing dancing and finally to see Vito Reza’s “Five After Four” (fifteen minutes early if you ask me) at The Jazz Bistro. Vito got me up to do some poetry and wow – with his grooves and that band…I really wanna record with him!
