It was really easy to get back into the swing of things…and I suppose 2014 has finally “officially” kicked off since I’m back in Toronto keeping busy doing what I do best…I’m back at JAZZ.FM, painting the town plaid on a regular basis, hosting parties at my loft and working on some artistic projects that always put the icing on the cake. This past week I took in the TSO with Melissa Shouldice…our first encounter since partying in Costa Rica one short week ago. She now in Russia and I’m off to New Orleans – so it was nice to have one more quick hang before she had to “splitsky”.
On Wednesday I hosted a Live To Air on JAZZ.FM91 with Bill McBirnie Trio. Bill and pianist Bernie Senensky beelined to my loft after their show and we had a super jazz jam, which included some puppetry from Frank Meschkuleit and a jaw-dropping version of “Mood Indigo” by trombonist Tom Walsh.
Alex Pangman had a sold-out gig at Hughs Room that I really wanted to hit, but the after show party for Bill McBirnie was planned before I knew, so I had to opt for the loft party plan. It’s a nice problem to have – too many potential fun things to do – but I deeply regret not seeing the big show that featured Kevin Clark, Ross Wooldrige and the rest of her Alley Cats!
I had the pleasure of hanging with Miss Julianna Capuletto on a jazz safari Friday night. Julianna is from Brazil and has a wonderful outlook on life and the music business. I have no doubt she can be successful on anything she sets her mind to.
Sunday was the Superbowl Poker Game Tournament I attend (and lose) every year. Jessica Pecchat joined me and after I lost my chips I thought it might be a good idea to go down and see how all the kids were doing. I always forget that the minute I’m around kids I become one…and a really FUN one…so in no time kids are punching me and making me do a monkey dance. People say I have a lot of energy but I think that’s cuz I don’t have kids. If I did, they’d get all of it and I’d be mellow dude in beige…so while I love hanging with kids, I suppose I’m grateful they belong to someone else. Whenever I babysit I make sure I have a girl with me to play “bad cop”, “reasonable babysitter” or “logical chaperone”. When a kid says “I don’t wanna go to bed” I say “well good, cuz I don’t want you to go to bed. I don’t want to watch TV or read a book all alone!” After poker I beelined to see Kevin Clark who was in town from New Orleans.
We hit a (completely) empty bar and watched the end of the extremely un-exciting Super Bowl. There was no one in the room except seven of us. The waitress explained that this was a bar in Little Portugal for soccer fans…real football (soccer)…and that they all boycott his night and sit home and cook food. They have no interest in the Superbowl. Fair enough, but they missed Bruno Mars & The Red Hot Chili Peppers!
And finally…I feel oh-so-compelled to announce…an amazing concert….contact LULA LOUNGE now to get tix for FEBRUARY 27th. Come witness 21st Century Francks! (8-10)!
