I appreciate all the email asking why I missed a week…I didn’t realize I have so many friends paying attention to this wordpress blog…and truth be told I have no excuse other than time flies when you are having fun. I’ve had four nights of jazz safaris and many nights painting the town with a date or a group of friends. So much great live music! I hit The Pilot Tavern for a tribute to Del Dako…a saxman turned vibraphonist who played with The Jive Bombers for ages. The Dako-Wake-o featured the Bombers and a slew of special guests including bluesman Johnny Maxx. I hit The Old Mill Inn half a dozen times in the past two weeks…memorable shows at The Home Smith Bar including Amy McConnell, William Sperandei and Mark Kieswetter.
I also caught shows in the main dining room…two shows for JAZZ.FM91’s Sound Of Jazz Concert Series. The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band do one big show every year for this series and this time around they featured special guest Tom Scott. Tom is one of the most recorded musicians on the planet…he’s played with everyone from John Lennon and Joni Mitchell to Pink Floyd and Blondie…he also wrote the theme songs to “Starsky & Hutch” and “The Streets of San Francisco”. On top of all that, Tom composed and conducted the score to “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”, a favourite movie from my youth.
My date was singer-songwriter Elise LeGrow – she loved the show as much as I did.
I also ran into my old pal Paul Irvine who brought his cool kids to the show. It was great to see so many young people in the room checking out talented musicians from various high schools across the city. What a show! The following Monday I witnessed the legendary Bucky Pizarelli with Canada’s sweetheart of swing, Alex Pangman.
The show featured all the musicians in a perfect light…solo after solo, each one better than the last, culminating in an enthusiastic standing ovation! Glenn Anderson did a five minute drum solo on “Sing Sing Sing” and Bucky and Drew Jureka did a plucking duet on guitar and violin that was truly entertaining!
I also spent three nights at Dovercourt House. Always such fun – I’m so excited the swing dancers will be coming en masse to my birthday party April 13th at Palais Royale. (Tickets are half gone – so get ’em now…info below)
I also frequented a new restaurant on College near Dovercourt called Habits Gastro Pub.
Habits are booking different kinds of music, but when there is jazz, I am there! Sam Broverman, One Big Song, Tony Quarrington and other fine acts have performed in the last couple weeks. I can also highly recommend the food (my favourite octopus appetizer) and the scotch list!
One night I took Kiran to see Mysteriously Yours dinner theatre – a great meal and enjoyable show! The cast have so much fun…the jokes are corny but it’s a wonderful night on the town! http://www.mysteriouslyyours.com
I hosted a loft party on a Tuesday night…I had over fifty people visiting. It was a great night of music and I promise to upload some really good photos by Janet Jardine once I get them.
I’m off on a road trip…flying to Florida in the morn and then travelling around, down south. Check back here in my blogland next Monday and I can promise some great stories and pics from New Orleans, Austin or wherever I end up. This is just an adventure – no work involved…starting with dinner with my mom and dad tomorrow (Monday) in Orlando.
MY BIRTHDAY BASH
